Status of Glacial Lakes

SUPARCO has been monitoring the status of 84 Glacial Lakes shared by NDMA using satellite imagery on regular basis. Satellite images, as of 08 May 2026, confirm that only 12 lakes (14%) are unfrozen, whereas 86% are either frozen or continuously under clouds. One lake in Shigar district has reached its maximum extent, whereas one in Chitral District has passed its maximum extent due to retreat by its parent glacier.
