Kotli Sattian is ecologically sensitive because the Murree-Kotli Sattian landscape is dominated by Chir pine forest, steep slopes and sub-watersheds linked with the Indus/Jhelum basin. Kotli Sattian forest area under Punjab Forest Department jurisdiction is about 27,653 acres. Massive forest fire event is observed from medium resolution satellite data of 29 May 2026 as compared to pre fire satellite image of 9 May 2026. An estimated 3326.4 ha (8219.5 acres) natural forest trees, shrubs and grass land cover has been impacted across 27 locations mostly in Kotli Sattian and adjoining areas. Many locations have active fire spreading with strong hot winds which will lead to more damage spread in near by areas. Some location are showing control of fire by the local and forest department staff leaving burn scars as visible on satellite images. These forest fire events generally affect the breeding season of the birds, animal, regeneration loss of seedlings and saplings and colonization of invasive fire tolerant grasses and shrubs.
